Under the new aid formula, an additional 2.1 million students should be eligible for the maximum Pell Grant, according to the Department of Education. Biden’s reelection campaign has repeatedly declined to commit to joining debates with Trump, his likely opponent in the November general election. Trump, meanwhile, has feuded with the Republican National Committee and refused to join its primary debates. In 2020, he objected to the rules of the nonpartisan commission that has hosted general election debates since 1976. Lowering his voice to a whisper, Coons said: “That was bad.”He then questioned whether a general election debate this year would be worth it. “But this is ultimately a judgment call for President Biden."

Investment firm JAT Capital sent a scathing letter to the board of the new Bed Bath & Beyond on Friday saying it has refused to answer questions from shareholders and is engaging in what the investment firm called unprecedented "poor behavior." Earlier this month, JAT called on Beyond to fire Johnson. In its letter, dated Friday, JAT questioned why Johnson's board seat was removed after his ouster and said it was an attempt to weaken "shareholders ability to have a say." JAT called on Beyond's board to answer its questions, once and for all, and for everyone from vendors to sell-side analysts to demand more transparency. The actions cited below which the Board has taken in the last 60 days appear to be to the detriment of the company and shareholders," the letter states.

Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Jonathan Johnson is stepping down from his role, the company said Monday. AdvertisementAdvertisementBed Bath & Beyond, formerly known as Overstock.com, has a new CEO as well as a new name. Johnson led the company's name change and has said that he looked at Bed Bath & Beyond's name "jealously for several years." Overstock said in June that it would change its name after acquiring the rights to Bed Bath & Beyond's name, trademarks, websites, mobile apps, and other elements of branding. Bed Bath & Beyond formerly was a chain of stores that sold home goods around the US.

The new Bed Bath & Beyond announced Monday its CEO, Jonathan Johnson, is immediately stepping down from his position just days after activist hedge fund JAT Capital called for his ouster. He led the company through its acquisition of Bed Bath & Beyond earlier this year and its corporate name change to Beyond Inc. , which took effect Monday. David Nielsen, Beyond's president and a former Payless ShoeSource executive, has taken over as interim CEO while the board undergoes a search for a permanent candidate. Beyond said Johnson's departure "follows mutual agreement" between him and the board to transition the company to new leadership, but the move came on suddenly. The company and Johnson didn't immediately return a request for comment seeking additional information.

Delta Air Lines said Wednesday that the pilot accused of threatening to shoot the plane's captain during a flight no longer works for the airline, and federal officials say his authority to carry a gun on board was revoked. The incidents have revived debate about psychological screening, which relies largely on trusting pilots to volunteer information about their mental health. Ross Aimer, retired airline pilot and now CEO of an aviation consulting company, said screening for mental health is far less than for drug and alcohol use and needs to be improved. He said pilots are unlikely to volunteer information that could point to mental health problems. “If I mention something about having mental issues, I’m done" — a pilot's career can be over — Aimer said.

Jonathan J. Dunn was indicted by a Utah grand jury on October 18 and charged with interference with a flight crew, stemming from an August 2022 incident, according to court documents. Dunn was authorized to carry a gun on board the plane due to the Transportation Security Administration’s Federal Flight Deck Officer program, the Inspector General’s office said. The Federal Flight Deck Officer program was developed in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks and involves training and arming pilots to handle an in-flight attack, such as a hijacking attempt. “Upon successful completion, the pilot is deputized as a federal law enforcement officer and issued a TSA-approved firearm and federal flight deck officer credentials,” the Transportation Security Administration said. Pilots, flight engineers and flight navigators who meet certain requirements are eligible for the program, according to the agency.

A pilot has been indicted for allegedly threatening to shoot the plane's captain if the captain diverted the flight because of a passenger who needed medical attention. “After a disagreement about a potential flight diversion due to a passenger medical event, Dunn told the Captain they would be shot multiple times if the Captain diverted the flight,” the inspector general's office said. It did not identify the airline on which the incident occurred, saying only that it was a commercial airline flight. He was subdued by the captain and co-pilot and arrested after the plane diverted to Portland, Oregon. Pilots are required during regular medical exams to disclose depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol dependence, and medications they take.

Mayor Eric Adams has made the conversion of struggling office buildings into residences a major component of his attempt to address New York City’s housing shortage. Mr. Amro said that despite the Flatiron’s quirky interior, its numerous windows would make a conversion into residences far easier than most office buildings. But the construction would require some major internal changes: Stairs and elevators must be moved around and consolidated. The owners have considered various plans, some with multiple units on each floor, with about 40 total residences. The ground floor, however, will remain retail space; T-Mobile has a store there with a long-term lease.

There’s little concern that the independent or third-party candidates would actually win the presidency, but they could siphon support from the ultimate Democratic and Republican nominees. In Arizona, alone, minor party candidates must collect more than 34,000 signatures to qualify for the general election ballot. An independent candidate must collect more than 43,000 signatures. Michigan requires a minor party candidate to collect 44,619 signatures and independents to collect 12,000. And in Nevada, a minor party or independent candidate must collect 10,095 signatures to qualify for the ballot.

They can also rile up Trump's own party, which then incorporates the former president's vendettas and impulses into its own agenda. Though most in his party have stayed quiet, Trump's comments about Milley horrified some Republicans. On the debate stage last week, Trump’s rivals for the GOP nomination didn't address the former president's more incendiary rhetoric. Democrats, including Biden, have warned that Trump and supporters in his Make America Great Again movement are a threat to American democracy. At last week's California Republican Party convention in a hotel ballroom in Anaheim, Trump’s rhetoric reached yet another level.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former President Donald Trump heads to southeast Iowa Sunday in the middle of a fall campaign push aimed at locking in supporters with large organizing events. As he has with his other recent travels to the leadoff caucus state, Trump will campaign in an area that formerly supported Democrats but has embraced him. Trump was planning to headline an afternoon event in Ottumwa, where his campaign was expecting more than 1,000 potential supporters. The small city is a hub in eastern Iowa and the seat of Wapello County, one of 31 counties Trump carried in 2016 that Democrat Barack Obama had won four years earlier. The third Republican presidential debate will be held in Miami on Nov. 8, a day after several states hold off-year elections, and candidates will be facing the most stringent requirements yet to take part. Details of the gathering come as the broad GOP field prepares for a second primary debate without their current front-runner. The requirements for the third debate will be more challenging to meet than the second. Scott, who was second from the right edge of the stage for the first GOP debate last month, has proposed the RNC change how it orders the candidates for next week's debate. Overstock.com's CEO told NBC News he was always jealous of Bed Bath & Beyond's iconic name. Overstock.com, led by CEO Jonathan Johnson, first bought Bed Bath & Beyond's digital assets in June after it went bankrupt earlier this year. With that purchase, Overstock has adopted Bed Bath & Beyond's brand image in place of its own — as of Tuesday, Overstock.com is out, and BedBathandBeyond.com is back in the game. "We've looked at Bed Bath and Beyond jealously for several years," Johnson told NBC News. The relaunched website allows customers to use up to $50 of their rewards points from old Bed Bath & Beyond accounts.
